IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING DATA LOSS: Immediately shut your computer down. Using it may overwrite data forever, making it impossible to recover. Any attempt to recover data must be made while the operating system is not running. Do not attempt to remove your hard drive and repair it yourself. Handling a hard drive incorrectly will further damage it. And do not put it in the freezer, condensation will destroy it.
A backup can be considered insurance for your data. Computer data can be easily lost: your hard drive can suddenly fail, a virus can wipe files from your computer or your computer/laptop may get stolen. Not to mention fire, flooding, etc...
